The Settlers of Catan Reviews

The Settlers of Catan is a game somewhat akin to Risk, but better because it employs more elements and is not necessarily combative in nature. Players need to use math skills (ratios & probability), communication skills (trading) and long term planning to win. All that being said, the complexity of any particular game is determined primarily by the players. In short, my 10 year old sister can play it & enjoy it as much as I do, as can my parents. Also, because each game is a little different, The Settlers of Catan never gets boring. I love it! I can't recommend it highly enough!
Interesting board game for older children and adults. Lots of small pieces but once you get set up it is pretty user friendly. The rules seem complex at first but after you run through it once it is easy to play. It is a lot of fun and it has a definite end game so it doesn't go on forever. We are in our 50's and it makes a good Friday night game.
I cannot recommend this game high enough for gamers 13 and older. I'd even recommend it for kids as young as 8 or adults in 50s! I originally bought this on the recommendations of friends. After one game, I couldn't stop thinking about it. After 3, I wanted to try all the variant play styles. After 5, I decided I would have to buy the extension and get a copy for my school's gaming club.
I'd go more into gameplay, but there are other reviews that cover that. On thing I LOVED is that everything has its own spot in the box, it comes with its own resealable bags, AND there's loads of extra room in the box!
LOVE THIS GAME!!!

I saw The Settlers of Catan board game at Barnes and Nobles. Curious at its bold claim of a fun, strategy game of trade which won Game of the Year, I went online and played it for free. Soon I was hooked and paid the $[...] for the board game version. My family enjoyed the game as much as I did, and we have spent many hours playing.
One of the biggest appeals is that The Settlers of Catan game is never the same as the board tiles change randomly each time, leading to endless replay. The strategy which helped you win last time may not be the best option in the next game.
Besides the original game, there are many variations and expansions which deeply enhance game play.
Heard a lot about this game, so I thought I would try it out.
It lived up to the hype as far as game play. Our very first game lasted over 2 hours with everyone holding the lead at one point and the least expected person stealing the win.
The "board" however is very chinzy. It is composed of a couple dozen cardbard pieces that you put together for each game, hense the differnt board each time.
It is a good idea and works just fine, I just wish that they used better materials (plastic or wood) and that there were some sort of base that the pieces fit into.
Also, there 20+ pieces for each player (cities, roads, etc). There is no good way to keep these (you get small ziplock bags), meaning that you can expect to lose pieces within a year.
